Why We Created This Space

One of the central challenges facing Métis scholars, students, and knowledge holders is a pervasive sense of invisibility, both within academic institutions and across our Métis homeland (Forsythe, 2023a). Despite the presence of vibrant Métis intellectual and creative work, we often remain disconnected from one another, scattered across disciplines, institutions, and geographic regions (Forsythe, 2023b). This fragmentation limits our ability to build collective momentum, share resources, and engage in reciprocal mentorship and collaboration.

The lack of visibility and connection not only hinders individual success but also impedes the development of Métis Studies, the interdisciplinary study of the Métis as a coherent and recognized field. As it stands, there is no formalized Métis Studies Faculty or Department in Canada. Without intentional infrastructure to locate and support one another, Métis scholars risk isolation, under-recognition, and missed opportunities for community-rooted scholarship.

To thrive in the academy, we must be able to see each other, know each other’s work, and build relationships that sustain both personal and collective growth (Forsythe & Lawton, 2024). This research directly responds to that need by creating platforms, such as a formalized network with membership and support facilitated through a dedicated website for the Métis Thinkers Network to foster awareness, networking and partnerships. These spaces will bring together community members, students, emerging scholars, and established academics to share knowledge, amplify existing contributions, and build the relationships necessary for Métis scholarship to flourish.
