Overview:
The purpose of this article is to explore the history of Indigenous sexuality education and to better understand the ways that it is being taken up by Indigenous artists, health campaigns, scholars, and educators. These Indigenous-led initiatives, grounded in specific Indigenous communities, traditional knowledges, and contemporary experiences, impact the ways that Indigenous youth view sexuality and sexual health. This article focuses on work that is being done in the country currently called Canada. The phrase “the country currently called Canada,” as well as the phrase “so-called Canada,” is used by Indigenous community members and scholars to remind readers that the lands within the borders of the nation-state of Canada have had many names before colonization and may have other names in the future. Although so-called Canada is the focus of this article, there may be aspects of the Indigenous experience within this unique colonial context that resonate with other Indigenous communities elsewhere.
